Fensham Howes co-authors guide to Trustee Investment

3rd April 2007

In early 2006 Fensham Howes Co-founder and Director Lew Howes was invited to co-author a new book entitled "Coldrick on Modern Trustee Investment: Law, Theory and Practice".

The invitation came from David Coldrick, partner at Wrigleys Solcitors and one of the leading UK experts in the field of administering private trusts. David has written numerous books covering the legal aspects of trusts, and as a professional trustee David shares responsibility for administering trust assets totalling hundreds of millions of pounds.

Coldrick on Modern Trustee Investment is a unique and practical exploration of the legal obligations and the available investment options in relation to trustee investment. It is designed specifically to enable trustees to fulfil their duty of care and make investment related decisions with increased insight, confidence, simplicity, cost-effectiveness and accountability.

The book aims to address a number of problem areas for trustee investors. The simple fact that something is quite properly classified as an investment does not make it an appropriate investment, either generally or for the purposes of a particular trust fund. In Coldrick on Modern Trustee Investment David Coldrick and Lew Howes seeks not only to address these issues but to set out ‘best practice’ in the field of trustee investment. The book defines a process that should maximise the quality of service and ultimately the return on investment for the beneficiary while simultaneously avoiding any potential ‘nasty surprises’ for the trustee.

At over 300 pages, the book is an in-depth analysis of key subjects including an assessment of acceptable investments, the basics of investment planning and measuring investment manager performance; practical guidance on assessing and managing the risk associated with investments is also given.

“Of all the tasks that trustees have to perform investing trust capital is one of the most important and it is the one by which they are likely to be judged most severely by their beneficiaries. But investment is no easy task, as this book demonstrates. David Coldrick and his colleagues are to be congratulated warmly for tackling one of the core subjects of trustee life with such enthusiasm and knowledge. Fascinating and rewarding.”
